Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed a bill on illegal immigration on April 23, 2010. The key points of the bill can be found at http://azstarnet.com/news/article_a9006f6b-f9b6-59db-87b4-d54a09b4b786.html . (Brady McCombs, ¡ÈExperts go over SB 1070¡Çs key points,¡É in Arizona Daily Star, May 2, 2010). The law is to be enforced in August, 2010.
The bill has been met with demonstrations and strong criticisms as many fear for the abuse of racial and ethnic profiling. While Gov. Brewer has emphasized that racial profiling will not be tolerated and that the bill provides a tool for border state to counter illegal immigration, however, there are still overwhelming concerns over the hostile environment and detrimental effects it may have on border state areas.
