The Etupirka Collection – a facility connecting border areas
In relation to the establishment of the Yonaguni Etupirka Collection, the mayor of Tsushima – the location of the second Etupirka Collection – presented a plaque for the library to the mayor of Yonaguni. The name Etupirka comes from an Ainu word for ¡Ètufted puffin¡É, and symbolizes a bird flying freely across national borders.
The first Etupirka Collection was established in the City of Nemuro, the second in Tsushima, which bought publications on border issues using donations from Hokkaido University Professor Akihiro Iwashita following his receipt of the prestigious Osaragi Jiro Prize for his book, Northern Territorial Issues: Neither Four nor Zero, nor Two.
The collection showcases a variety of publications on national borders and border issues.
