Charter Flight from Yonaguni to Hualien
On 15th May, participants at a seminar in Yonaguni, Okinawa, organized by 'Japan's Network on Border Studies', flew on a chartered plane to Hualien in Taiwan. The city of Hualien is located about 111km westwards of Yonaguni Island. The flight was operated by Trans-Asia Airways based in Taipei, and the anniversary of Okinawa¡Çs reversion to Japanese administration was commemorated with the holding of two consecutive days of seminars in Yonaguni and Hualien.
The three mayors of Yonaguni, Ishigaki and Taketomi in the Yaeyama Islands, Shuukichi Hokama, Yoshitaka Nakayama and Eicho Kawamitsu respectively, were on board the flight. For them, the flight was also meant as the opening event in their tour of Taiwan to promote sightseeing in the Yaeyama Islands. At a ceremony conducted before the plane took off, the three mayors joined Akihiro Iwashita, leader of the Global COE Program, Masatoshi Ishigaki, deputy mayor of Nemuro, and Yasunari Takarabe, mayor of Tsushima, in celebrating the realization of this flight.
At Hualien Airport, the seminar participants were warmly welcomed by the mayor of Hualien, Tien Chih-hsuan, and municipal government officials. They then repaired to the Parkview Hotel to participate in the second day of seminars, again organized by the Research Network of Border Regions in Japan.
