First East Asian Conference for Slavic Eurasian Studies
on February 5-6, 2009

Based on an agreement reached on May 7, 2008, the Japanese Council for Russian and East European Studies (JCREES), the Korean Association of Slavic Studies (KASS), the Chinese Association for East European, Russian, and Central Asian Studies (CAEERCA) will hold the First East Asian Conference for Slavic Eurasian Studies on February 5-6, 2009. This conference will take place at Hokkaido University (Sapporo, Japan) and is approved as a regional conference of the International Council for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES). Its host organizations are the JCREES and the Slavic Research Center, Hokkaido University. You are invited to attend the Conference.

Call for Proposals
Among the various interactions between Slavic Eurasian and neighboring territories, only the EU expansion has enjoyed more or less consistent scholarly interest, while topics such as China’s impact on the transformation of Central Asia and Russian Far East, roles of Turkey in the Caucasus, Central Asia and Crimea, and other eastern factors barely go beyond journalistic descriptions. This imbalance in research interest produces a distorted perception of Slavic Eurasia. The three Slavicist associations in East Asia endeavor to overcome this situation by strengthening the Eurasian and Asian dimensions of research. With this in mind, the proposed conference is titled:

“Resurgence of Russia and the Future of Eurasia: Views from the East”
This title, however, does not imply a limit to participation in the conference to East Asian scholars; on the contrary, scholars from other parts of Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America are welcome. We also appreciate the attendance and participation of book publishers and editorial boards of academic journals.
