1913-2013 for Eurasia:A Great Experiment or a Lost Century?

Dear Colleagues:

The submission of proposals for the Fifth East Asian Conference on Slavic Eurasian Studies to be held on August 9-11, 2013 was closed at the end of this April. We accepted twenty-one panel proposals and nearly fifty individual paper proposals. As a result, the Osaka conference will be composed of thirty-seven panels with 114 papers. The impending conference will be the largest in the history of East Asian conferences on Slavic Eurasian Studies, which started in 2009. I am grateful to those who responded to our call from within and outside Asia.

In the two months before the conference, the Organizing Committee will endeavor to make this event a real opportunity for discussion and mutual understanding of Slavist communities of Asia, which have so far developed in relative isolation from each other. We will also strive to secure the participants’ safe passage, regular accommodation, and rich cultural programs.

　A year ago, I decided to chair the Organizing Committee of the impending East Asian Conference on Slavic Eurasian Studies, being aware that Osaka University of Economics and Law, at which I am serving as president, will be honored to invest significant financial and human resources in this event. I accepted the offer not only because I am a historian who has devoted his life to the study of Russia and the Soviet Union, but also because the founding idea of my university urged me to work for this event. Osaka University of Economics and Law is relatively young, founded in 1971. This university promotes youth to become specialists able to “quest for truth through practices.” Active international cooperation is an indispensable part of this founding idea. There is a vast, still unexploited, potential for cooperation between Japan, China, Korea, the Russian Far East, and Central Asia to develop Slavic Eurasian studies in this part of the globe. I am convinced that our new campus named “Oval” in Yao City of Osaka will provide you with ideal conditions for the success of this academic event.

Though the Organizing Committee is no longer accepting proposals, we encourage researchers, graduate and undergraduate students to attend this epoch-making event and take part in discussion.

How to Get to the Conference Venue?

The conference venue, Osaka University of Economics and Law, is located in a walking distance from Yao Station of the Kintetsu Line.. Please be headed to Yao Station, at which conference staffs will show you the way to the venue. There are Osaka University and Osaka University of Economics in Osaka and even taxi drivers and hotelmen often confuse Osaka University of Economics and Law with these universities.
Please do not be confused.The conference venue is Osaka University of Economics and Law!　In Japanese this university is pronounced: “Osaka keizai houka daigaku.”
