筆者はこれまで主としてハンガリーを主とした東欧の経済史を研究してきた。わけても、東欧ロシア地域が今日に おいても色濃く農村社会的な要素を残している ことから、通時的に農村社会の変遷を跡づけてきた。現地調査が非常に困難であった1970年代においても、最初の留学時代であるが、農村調査を行ない、現 実の農村における社会経済の動きが国政レベルでの政治経済改革とどのように係わっているかを現場から体験する機会となった。分析の基本的な姿勢は、個別事 例研究を徹底的に突き詰めてゆくと普遍的な世界に行き着くという考え方である。この15年間における具体的な研究としては、ハンガリー農村における富農層 を分析素材とし、社会主義時代および社会主義以後の事例調査を積み重ねてきた。現在は現地での調査結果を集大成し、社会主義以前における富農研究とあわせ て、農村社会と体制変動の関わりについて一冊の本（英文）にまとめる仕事を行っている。

研究センターの一員として国内外における連携研究を企画立案する立場からは、第一に筆者の専門領域に最も近い 農村社会経済の再編に関して1998年から昨 年まで日本とロシア東欧の農村社会経済専門家と共同研究を行い、それを二冊の英文の本にまとめた。最終的な成果発表である国際シンポジウムでは欧米の専門 家も交えて幅広い討議を行った。その報告書は刊行されたばかりであるが、すでに欧米、ロシア、ハンガリーで高い評価を得ている。

第二の連携研究分野は地方自治である。社会主義崩壊後、おおかたの関心は中央政治に向けられたが、将来的には 地方（リージョン）のほうが重要になるという 見通しから、まずは地方制度の再編に注目した。その際、日本国内の若手研究者を指導しながら、研究会を積み重ね、その成果を英文で刊行する所まで到達し た。その内容は均質ではないが、国際的にも先駆的な試みとして注目され、ドイツの専門誌や国連の東欧関連研究部会が高く評価した。現状についての日本発信 型スラブ研究が単行本となって欧米の専門家に評価された先駆けといえる。

筆者の今ひとつの研究領域は外向きの地域研究を触発していく作業である。もともと経済史を専門としているが、 あえて政治や社会思想にも踏み込んで、問題を 提起してきた。また空間的にもスラブと隣接する地域との相互関係を問う研究領域を開拓しようと考えている。すでに数年前にこの観点から東欧のEU加盟問題 を論じたことがあるが、東欧やイギリスでも最近は相互関係に注目する研究が生まれ始めており、今後はこうした研究と連携しながら国際的に分析を深めてゆき たいと考えている。
